Merton is one of the six London boroughs to secure a share of a pot of £850,000 for landmark cultural projects, following its entry into the London Borough of Culture competition.
While Merton didn’t win the overall London Borough of Culture title for 2019 or 2020, this successful bid for funding focuses on bringing film to Merton, creating spaces for pop-up cinemas across the borough. There will be seasons of short films curated by the community and guest curators, which will be played at the new pop-up cinema locations across Merton. There will also be three short films delivered by early career film-makers together with the community.
Part of Merton’s bid is an augmented reality matrix that will be embedded across Merton, as well as an exciting virtual reality festival.
Merton’s bid includes 25 community commissions, three show-stopping ‘spectaculars’, business development initiatives and a film festival, all captured under six over-arching strands focused on building a united Merton, promoting togetherness and inclusivity.
